Competition policy

Nederlands Toernooi voor Dansende Studenten 2024

The competition policy will inform you of everything you need to know as a participant during the Dutch Tournament for Dancing Students, hereafter NTDS. Read this thoroughly, so that you know the rules that apply.
GENERAL:
1. The NTDS is a yearly recurring event for students, organized by the NTDS-committee in name of the Foundation Dancing Students (SDS).

2. The NTDS-committee reserves the right to deviate from the below written rules by exception in case of conflict, and will have the final say in decisions.

3. In the case of a situation where below-written rules are insufficient, the NTDS committee will have the final say in decisions.

PARTICIPATION:

4. Every student may participate in the NTDS, provided they are connected to a Dutch student ballroom dance association by means of a membership or a donorship.

5. Participation in the NTDS is possible for non-students (hereafter externals) only if they are connected to a Dutch student ballroom dance association by means of a membership or a donorship.

CLASSES:

6. The NTDS distinguishes three classes, namely: the Beginners class, the Breitensport and the Open class.

7. Participants of the Beginners class may have no more than one year of dancing experience as per March 6, 2024. Participants with a higher level than may reasonably be expected in the Beginners class, must instead be signed up for Breitensport by their team captain. In case of doubt about possible participation, the team captain and the NTDS committee will discuss the level of the concerning participant.

8. Participants in the Breitensport will first dance a qualification round, after which they will classify for one of four subclasses. In increasing level, those are: Amateurs, Professionals, Masters, and Champions. If the number of participants in the Breitensport gives rise hereto, the NTDS committee may decide to scratch one of the subclasses.

9. In the case that the jury concludes in the first round that the level of a couple is too high for the concerning class, they may in consultation decide to move the couple to a higher class.

10. Participants are denied participation in the Beginners class, and as such may register in the Breitensport, in the case they've achieved one of the following levels:

23. When blinddating is mandatory for a participant, see articles 10 to 12, a partnership with their fixed class and/or training partner or fellow formation team member is ruled out. Blinddating within one's own NTDS team is allowed, provided it doesn’t concern a fixed class and/or training partner or fellow formation team member. The team captain carries the responsibility of enforcing this rule.

24. When blinddating is mandatory for a participant, see articles 10 to 12, partnership with a (former) competition partner in the concerning discipline is ruled out. This includes partners from student dance tournaments over the last two years.

CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR:

The image below states the rules regarding clothing during the competitions. In individual cases of doubt or conflict, the ETDS committee will decide whether the respective clothing is allowed in the competition. If you’re in doubt about whether your outfit is allowed, it’s good to bring a spare outfit.

Rules regarding clothing::

25. Competitive dance clothes are not allowed, e.g. tailcoats, tailored dance dresses, latin dresses for competitions or dance suits.

26. Covering the buttocks, belly and breasts with a non-transparent, non-skin colour textile is mandatory. These areas should also be covered whilst dancing.

27. Excessive feathers, glitter and rhinestones are not allowed on clothing, on accessories or on hair.

Rules regarding shoes:

28. Latin and ballroom dance shoes are allowed.

29. Rubber soles and outdoor shoes are not allowed on the dance floor.

30. Heel protectors are mandatory for ladies' shoes.

31. Using paraffin or oil under your shoes is forbidden.

If damage to the dancefloor or floor in the sleeping hall is caused by using unsuitable shoes, damage costs will be recovered from the respective participant.

POINT RANKINGS FOR THE LION:

32. The Lion will be handed out to the highest placing team in the point rankings.

33. The hosting university cannot win the Lion.

34. Points are earned by individual dance performance:
(a) All participants in the Breitensport earn a fixed number of points based on their qualification to a subclass: Amateurs, Professionals, Masters or Champions;

37. ‘Blinddate’ dancers earn a fixed number of bonus points on top of their achieved results.
